چکیده

We present new high resolution neutral hydrogen (H i) images of the Galactic supershell GSH 242-03+37. These data were obtained with the Parkes Radiotelescope as part of the Galactic All-Sky Survey (GASS). GSH 242-03+37 is one of the largest and most energetic H i supershells in the Galaxy with a radius of 565 ± 65 pc and an expansion energy of 3 × 10 ergs. Our images reveal a complicated shell with multiple chimney structures on both sides of the Galactic plane. These chimneys appear capped by narrow filaments about 1.6 kpc above and below the Galactic mid-plane, confirming structures predicted in simulations of expanding supershells. The structure of GSH 242-03+37 is extremely similar to the only other Galactic supershell known to have blown out of both sides of the plane, GSH 277+00+36. We compare the GASS H i data with X-ray and H-α images, finding no strong correlations. The ‘Carina Flare’ Supershell: Probing the Atomic and Molecular ISM in a Galactic Chimney

The ‘Carina Flare’ supershell, GSH 287+04-17, is a molecular supershell originally discovered in CO(J=1-0) with the NANTEN 4m telescope. We present the first study of the shell’s atomic ISM, using Hi 21 cm line data from the Parkes 64m telescope Southern Galactic Plane Survey. The data reveal a gently expanding, ∼ 230 × 360 pc Hi supershell that shows strong evidence of Galactic Plane blowout, ...

Are Supershells Powered by Multiple Supernovae? Modeling the Radio Pulsar Population Produced by OB Associations

Traditional searches for radio pulsars have targeted individual small regions such as supernova remnants or globular clusters, or have covered large contiguous regions of the sky. None of these searches has been specifically directed towards giant supershells, some of which are likely to have been produced by multiple supernova (SN) explosions from an OB association. Here we perform a Montecarl...

v 1 2 J an 2 00 2 SiO chimneys and supershells in M 82 1 S . Garćıa - Burillo J . Mart́ın - Pintado A . Fuente

In this letter we present the first images of the emission of SiO and H 13 CO + in the nucleus of the starburst galaxy M 82. Contrary to other molecular species, which mainly trace the distribution of the star forming molecular gas within the disk, the SiO emission extends noticeably out of the galaxy plane. The bulk of the SiO emission is restricted to two major features. The first feature, re...

Environment of the Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 971214: A Giant H ii Region Surrounded by a Galactic Supershell.

Among a number of gamma-ray bursts whose host galaxies are known, GRB 971214 stands out for its high redshift (z>/=3) and the Lyalpha emission line having a P Cygni-type profile, which is interpreted to be a direct consequence of the expanding supershell. From a profile-fitting analysis, we estimate the expansion velocity of the supershell (vexp=1500 km s-1) and the neutral column density (NHi=...

Economic (Cost-Benefit) Analysis of Power Generation from Commercial Reinforced Concrete Solar Chimney Power Plant Built in the Desert Regions of Iran

This paper expands a model different from existing models to analyze the cost and benefit of areinforced concrete solar chimney power plant (RCSCPP) built in the desert regions of Iran.Based on the model and some assumptions for values of parameters, this paper calculates totalnet present value (TNPV) and the minimum electricity price in each phase by dividing the wholeservice period into four ...
